October 2007 Survey Question

Have you, a family member or friend ever worked in agriculture? What were the circumstances?

I grew up on a little farm which produced the food that our little household needed - goats milk, cheese, chickens for eggs and meat, and a beautiful and bountiful garden. I have no connections to mass agriculture, but I have many farmer friends who sell their produce at local Farmer's Markets and I am fortunate to live in an area that really celebrates local food and farms.

While I never worked in the agricultural industry, my dad's grandfather was a farmer. My dad's father a university professor and ardent gardener who grew most of the family's produce. My dad, a financial planner, raises a few sheep and vegetables to eat and to fill the freezer for winter. So I grew up around small-scale gardening. Perhaps each generation moves a little farther away from the land. I belong to a CISA and pick a few vegetables here and there. As a teenager I would have worked the strawberry or tobacco fields in our town, however severe allergies sent me to work in my mom's offices or mcdonalds rather than the fields.
