How do you see class differences in the way that holidays are celebrated?
After spending holidays and other social events with families of different social classes, I realized how, as a working class family, our festivities were much different. As a child there was always plenty of food but mostly there was lots of noise and happy boisterous chattering. There was always a focus on being together as a family and having fun. I can recall, after my youngest uncle married my aunt, that my mother and my aunts tone during and after events changed. This aunt, I don’t believe with ill intentions, felt our celebrations were not to her (upper middle class) families “standards” and would make comments that would send the women in my family into a fit after she left. Only now I can look back and realize that class divides ended up creating personal arguments and grudges in our family (that still exist). Without the language to acknowledge that classim was the root of these issues, the women in my family still stand divided against the youngest aunt.
