Opportunity: Class Action works to end classism through raising awareness and inspiring action. The Race/Class Intersections Program Coordinator will have an exceptional opportunity to have a significant impact on the direction of this small but extremely dynamic social change organization. The Race/Class Intersections Program Coordinator will work closely with communities of color and nationally recognized classism experts to create new understandings of the intersections between race and class, and develop curricula to help communities of color respond to classism within and beyond their communities.
This work aims to help catalyze a more energized movement for economic equality, expand coalition building and collaboration across class and race lines, and increase class-consciousness and analysis within higher ed, K-12 schools, social service agencies, and social change organizations.
Organization: Class Action works to end classism on multiple levels – interpersonally, organizationally, and culturally. Class Action is located in Hadley, Massachusetts, in the heart of the Pioneer Valley’s Five-College Area.
About the Race/Class Intersections Program:
Class and Race Intersections will explore the unique ways that classism is manifest within communities of color. This program aims to better serve communities of color in their quest for justice by addressing concepts of classism in a framework that takes racism fully into account. We also hope to build bridges between low-income white communities and communities of color by developing programs that jointly acknowledge the power of classism and racism.
Job Responsibilities: The Race/Class Intersections Program Coordinator is responsible for building, leading, and growing the Race/Class Intersections Program of Class Action.
- Outreach to communities of color, low-income communities, and social change organizations; build relationships, develop anti-classist leadership, and increase their participation in Class Action's programs
- Convene focus groups or other group discussions on class; report learnings to Class Action staff and board
- Conduct trainings on class for communities of color and seek input to further develop trainings
- Help identify how Class Action’s educational work can better serve communities of color and low-income communities and develop new curricula and materials
- Help expand the capacity of people of color and low-income people doing educational work on classism through training and technical assistance
- Write articles for publication on the intersections of race and class, website materials, development materials and program reports
- Work with Class Action board members, colleagues and other trainers
Skills Needed:
- Communication: with individuals and groups from varied class and race backgrounds.
- Public speaking: engaging an audience from a podium or in a workshop setting
- Facilitation: leading workshops and facilitating dialogue
- Listening: hearing what is said and sensing what is unspoken
- Writing: clearly communicating messages for different audiences (community groups, educators, etc.)
- Administrative skills: good basic administration skills including time management, the ability to develop work plans, and solid computer skills.
- Relationship building: Candidates should have the ability to develop and maintain relationships with diverse organizations and people.
- Passion: Well-developed class awareness and a passion for ending classism, racism and economic injustice are a must.
Experience Required:
- The ideal candidate will have at least five years of experience in social justice work, especially working with low-income people and people of color.
- Experience developing curricula and materials and teaching, training, and/or consulting is necessary

- The drive to achieve results while respecting others; the ability to take initiative while remaining open to ideas of others; teamwork; flexibility; entrepreneurial, can-do attitude: all are important.
- An understanding and commitment to social justice issues, being realistically optimistic, and having a sense of humor will help you succeed in this position.
Candidates must be able and willing to travel (both locally and nationally), as well as work some evenings and weekends.

Salary & Benefits:
The salary range is $40-48,000, depending on experience, with a generous benefit package.
