Exploring Class in a Time of Financial Meltdown
Exploring Class workshops offer in-depth exploration of the way that class impacts our personal identities, our institutions, and our work for social change. In the United States, discussing class issues is taboo, perhaps even more so than other aspects of personal identity such as race, sexuality and religion. Feelings of shame, and/or guilt, at being poorer or richer than others leads to secrecy and silence, which only perpetuates myths around class in America and reinforces the growing divisions amongst us. In this period of renewed hope, increased engagement, and financial crisis; it is more important than ever to gain experience and skills in talking about class.
In this workshop we examine:
• our own class identities
• assumptions we have about other classes
• economic policies
• changes in wealth distribution
• understanding the complexities of class
• steps to take in our lives and within our institutions to overcome class barriers.
Exploring Class is available in both one- and two-day formats.
Color of Class: A Workshop for People of Color
An exploration of class in a context that takes race fully into account.
In the United States, class has been racialized. As people of color, race is in our face. We feel the impact of race and racism, and by no means are we done talking about it!
As the economic divide among people of color widens, it becomes even more important to explore the dynamics of class. Class is more subliminal. Although class is much less talked about, it is still profound. Class and race are interconnected, but they are not the same. We need to develop our ability to discuss and take action on class issues. In this workshop we work to better understand how our current economic inequality has been and continues to be shaped by racialized policies and behavior from the past to the present. We develop common language to talk about class by using experiential activities, dialogue, and a video to explore the ways race and class intersect on individual and societal levels. Come join us on our journey towards, hope, change, and solidarity.
Why a space specifically for people of color?
Color of Class is available in both one- and two-day formats.
