Breaking Taboos:
A Cross-Class Reading & Discussion Group
We are looking for more individuals interested in learning about class inequities, cross-class coalition building, economic structures, differing
lived class experiences, and related issues. We explore these
issues by drawing form various materials including: book chapters,
articles, short stories, biographies, cartoons and various popular media
(perhaps occasionally watching a short film during meetings).
Here are some comments from Cara, one of the founding members:
"We hoped that this group would allow for cross-class discussions mediated by articles and other written materials. We chose several selections each meeting from books and articles in the Class Action library. We read from such books as Without a Net, Nickeled and Dimed, Real World Micro, Class Matters, The Haves and Have Nots, Resource Generation, Trash by Dorothy Allison, Where We Stand by bell hooks, The Color of Wealth, and Economic Apartheid. What's resulted from these meetings is part support group, part swapping of personal stories, and part discussion of various writings, all immersed in the looming topic of class. I can only hope that this group continues as we've only begun to tap into the possibilities."
This group is shaped by the interest of the participants. A different
person will facilitate discussions each week, and the group decides on the
next week’s readings.
The group meets at the lending library (Suite 19) of Class Action, 245 Russell Street (Route 9) Hadley Park Plaza in Hadley, MA. Contact us for more information or if you are interested in participating.
If you would like to start your own discussion group please contact us to obtain reading materials and suggestions.
