We are deeply saddened by the loss of Senator Ted Kennedy, tireless advocate for equality and justice.
A man of great class privilege, Senator Kennedy fully embraced the lesson he says he learned from his mother and his father: “Much is expected of those to whom much has been given.” For more than four decades of public service, he used his power, passion, and vision to demand equality for all of us.
His courageous and unflinching leadership on economic justice, civil rights, voting rights, education, women’s issues, disability rights, LGBT equality, peace, and health care improved the lives of millions of people. His goal for health care, which he called the cause of his life, was to guarantee that decent quality health care was a fundamental right for every American and not a privilege for the wealthy few.
We admire a man whose professional work reflected our mission: bridging the class divide and inspiring action to end classism.
Inspired by Senator Kennedy’s legacy, we continue to strive toward a world without classism – in which people from every background have their basic needs met, have access to resources, are treated with dignity and respect, can develop their full potential, and have a voice in decisions that affect them.
As he so eloquently said in 1980, “For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dream shall never die.”
Senator Ted Kennedy – a true class act.
