Monthly Action Against Classism

MAY

In honor of May Day (the 1st):

Wear white in support of the National Immigrant Solidarity Network's call for a national day of multi-ethnic unity with youth, labor, peace and
justice communities in solidarity with immigrant workers. We are all humans! No one is illegal!

In honor of Mother's Day (the 13th):

Donate money to your favorite charity in the name of your mother.

Send letters in support of women and mothers to policy and culture makers.

Send Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao letter urging her to restore the Women's Bureau's funding to FY2006 levels by clicking here.

*In February, Congress passed and the President signed a year-long Continuing Resolution (CR) that provided funding for the Women's Bureau at the same level it was funded in FY2006. Unfortunately, Secretary Chao ignored the intention of the CR, and took funds away from the Women's Bureau in order to increase administrative offices at Department of Labor headquarters, including the Executive Secretariat and Legal Services.

*The Mommy Wars are a media concoction designed to sell magazines and to increase ratings. Mothers in the paid labor force and mothers who are not have vastly more in common than what separates them. Demand a ceasefire in the so-called “Mommy Wars.” Let the heads of CBS, NBC, and ABC know it's time to move beyond the false rhetoric of the 'Mommy Wars.' Sign the "Ceasefire Petition" now.

In honor of Memorial Day (the 28th):

Support your local emergency shelters by donating food, clothes or money. Chances are you'll be supporting veterans.

Contact your local VA and ask them about volunteer opportunities they have.

*Although accurate numbers are impossible to come by -- no one keeps national records on homeless veterans -- the VA estimates that nearly 200,000 veterans are homeless on any given night. And nearly 400,000 experience homelessness over the course of a year. Conservatively, one out of every three homeless men who is sleeping in a doorway, alley or box in our cities and rural communities has put on a uniform and served this country. To find out what more you can do to help homeless veterans click here.
