August 29th marks the 2-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s disastrous arrival in the United States.
Poor government preparation and organization resulted in the displacement of thousands. Those most effected were low-income populations that are still struggling to recover and move on.
To mark this historic date, get a few friends together to watch Spike Lee’s documentary When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts.
Then if you have a few dollars (or many) to spare, pull out your checkbook – or go online – and make a contribution to help rebuild the Gulf South.
The Twenty-First Century Foundation (21CF), one of the few endowed African American foundations in the country, reaches groups in the Gulf South through their 21CF Hurricane Renewal Fund. The fund makes strategic grants for relief, recovery, and advocacy efforts that provide a voice for all people in the rebuilding plans for the region, and that promote long-term equitable solutions.
Or get involved with The Gulf South Allied Funders (GSAF), a group started in December of 2005 by nine donors, connected to each other through Resource Generation . The group pledged to try and generate a steady, three-year funding stream for organizing and advocacy work in the Gulf Coast region. Through house parties and individual visits, GSAF continues to raise funds and awareness to address the local tragedy and the national implications of events in the region. All funds raised by The Gulf South Allied Funders are distributed through the Twenty-First Century Foundation.
