Inspiring Action:
Class Action's Campaign for Growth
“Moving to action means responding to the call
to grow. Class Action is committed to ending the
status quo. We can’t just sit around and wait for
change to happen. We need to work together, be
brave and take risks,” says Donna Johnson, Class
Action board chair.
Classism keeps some of us down and hurts us all.
Class Action is launching Inspiring Action, a bold
campaign to raise $200,000. This campaign offers
all of us an opportunity to invest in a more equal
future.
Inspiring Action draws its name from Class Action’s
mission to “inspire action to end classism.” The
campaign funds two new programs, increases online interactivity, and strengthens Class
Action’s infrastructure.
Class and Race Intersections will explore the
unique ways that classism is manifest within
communities of color. This program aims to better
serve communities of color in their quest for justice
by addressing concepts of classism in a framework
that takes racism fully into account. It also seeks to
build bridges between low-income white communities
and communities of color by developing programs
that jointly acknowledge the power of classism
and racism.
“I’m very happy with the direction that we are
taking as an organization,” reflects board member
Juan Carlos Aguilar. “I believe that our work is
becoming more meaningful. By intentionally
creating the spaces where low income white
and people of color can meet to find a common
ground, we are a step closer to reaching our goals.”
Wealth-Blind Admissions, the second new program, seeks to
increase educational opportunities for low-income and first-
generation college students, giving students from all economic
backgrounds equal access to higher education.
Inspiring Action allows Class Action to expand interactivity on
classism.org, creating a virtual community for people to learn
about classism and engage in cross-class dialogue. Classism.org
already receives over 10,000 visits per month and is used by
people across the globe.
Inspiring Action strengthens Class Action’s long-term capacity,
funding a development director position, and a move to larger
facilities. New space will allow Class Action to hold some
programs on site, engage more volunteers, and house an
expanded staff on site.
“Raising consciousness about classism is central to Class
Action’s mission. It is the first step in creating change to the
class system,” says co-founder and executive director Felice
Yeskel. “In just two and a half years, we’ve reached thousands
of people through workshops and presentations, and thousands
more through the Internet. Inspiring Action will allow Class
Action to expand our scope and reach.”
